Australian Radial Racer Wade Wagstaff Ready For No Mercy 9

There is something very unique about the experience you get at one of Duck X Productions‘ radial tire races at South Georgia Motorsports Park (SGMP) that you won’t get anywhere else. Australian Wade Wagstaff made the trip to Lights Out this year and it was such an amazing experience that he decided he had to be a part of it. Now, Wagstaff is boxing up his Tim McAmis-built 1957 Chevrolet and shipping it to the United States to be a part of No Mercy 9 in Radial vs The World.

Wagstaff’s introduction to motorized performance came from trips with his family in the rumble seat of their hot rod as they traveled around his native state of Queensland. With a father who loved American muscle cars, it was only a matter of time before Wagstaff took a crack at the drag strip and became instantly hooked. Soon, Wagstaff and his father were racing a 1941 Willys that was imported from the United States and that was then replaced by the current ’57 Chevy that he pilots.

After running consistent six-second passes in the Supercharged Outlaw class, Wagstaff was ready to go faster so he made the switch to a PSI screw blower and jumped into the Top Doorslammer world. With the burning desire to crack into the five-second zone, Wagstaff and his team put in some serious work to get that PSI blower working.

“We were really hungry for the five-second pass. After months of 15-hour days at our local track, Willowbank Raceway, we ran a 5.96 at the Brisbane Jamboree event in 2017. We were told the body of the car was an illegal shape for a Doorslammer, so that’s when we decided to take the wheelie bars off and throw out the slicks for a set of 315 radials. We ran a best of 4.06 with minimal runs and at the time that was good enough to be the quickest radial pass in Australia,” Wagstaff says.

With radial tire experience already under his belt and motivation from his trip to Lights Out, Wagstaff made the choice to ship his car to Georgia to compete at No Mercy. Wagstaff isn’t bringing a knife to a gunfight by any means in the Radial vs The World category. His car is powered by 521 cubic-inch Hemi from Noonan that sucks in air via a PSI D-rotor supercharger. Behind the engine is a Bruno/Lenco drive unit with a billet Neal Chance Racing Converters torque converter.

Going to No Mercy is the experience of a lifetime for Wagstaff and he’s more than ready to use it as a platform to move his program even further forward when it comes to performance. “I’m very excited to get to run on a well-prepped track while watching and learning from all the talented people that will be at the race. We really want to run a three-second pass at No Mercy … that would be a huge thing for us,” Wagstaff explains.

Much of Wagstaff’s success in racing comes from the crew that assists him at the track. His family and crew all help on raceday and can turn his car around in 40 minutes or less. They have spent a lot of time together and their bond will help ensure their trip to No Mercy will be a success.

“My dad is my biggest supporter, we started this journey together and I strive to make him proud. My partner, Emma-Lee, has never missed a race. She backs me up every pass and gets in there and services the car. I’d like to thank all the people that help me support me and my racing program. Craig Burns from SCF Racecars, Jamie and Reene Noonan from Noonan Engines, Luke Marsden, Custom Transmissions, Marty Chance from Neal Chance Converters, Menscer Motorsport, Carolina N/T, and Allstar Locksmiths.”

Wade Wagstaff is ready to make No Mercy 9 an international affair at SGMP September 27-30 that you won’t want to miss. All of the small-tire insanity will be broadcast live RIGHT HERE on SpeedVideo.com when No Mercy 9 begins. This broadcast is brought to you by presenting sponsor Edelbrock along with, COMP Cams, TCI, FAST, ProCharger, and Honeywell Garrett.
