The Mickey Thompson Shootout Series contested their latest event Saturday at Osage Casino Tulsa Raceway Park and the always-tacky surface lived up to its billing as witnessed by Terry Foster, driver of the 3D Racing 1970 ½ Pro Modified Camaro. Don and Donna Johnson, owners of the gravity-defying Camaro, were also on hand to witness the car’s attempt at interplanetary orbit. Luckily, when the car came back to earth the only damage incurred was to a wheelie bar that received a dogleg bend that only took minor tweaking to make right again.
The Cookson, Oklahoma-based race team has made numerous low four second 1/8th mile runs with their Pro Modified Camaro at Tulsa Raceway Park over the years, but Saturday night’s blast off was something that caught both owner/tuner and driver completely off guard. After making a previous pass in the third round of qualifying on a blistering 140+ degree track that wasn’t going to put the 3D Racing Camaro into the qualified field, the team decided after the sun began to set on a 100 degree day in T-town it was time to tune the Camaro up a bit and go for the gusto.
Well, as you can easily see, the 3D Racing Team’s mount was ready to blast down the black ribbon of asphalt known as the strip and right into the eliminations rounds. However, TRP’s max traction and the Camaro’s demeanor weren’t in agreement for the final qualifying attempt, as documented by the incredible shots taken by Steven Wilson and his son Dallas. After the spectacular all-wheel launch occurred, Tahlequah, Oklahoma, driver Terry Foster said, “The car did something completely weird and we’ll figure it all out before the next race.” And that’s the way it went down for the Okie-based 3D Racing team. You can also bet they will be back in action at the next event because just like all other drag racing teams on this planet, they’re just trying to live the dream.
